InGAME Innovation Sprints

What is an Innovation Sprint?

InGAME Innovation Sprints are creative, fast-paced, mission-oriented responses to strategic challenges set by Challenge Champions. Our Champions come from a diversity of sectors, all united by one thing: a recognition of the unique innovation potential of games and play. You’ll work with them to imagine, design and realize proof-of-concept demonstrators that represent the first step in solving difficult problems and realising emerging opportunities. And you do that by harnessing your creative superpowers, working in collaboration with other superstars in cross-functional teams.

How will you harness my superpowers?

We are looking for Designers, Thinkers, Makers and Storytellers who are imaginative, curious and playfully unorthodox. You don’t need any expertise in the championed industry as you and your team will be assigned an expert to work with. Our innovation playbook and sprint team will be on hand to suggest tools and frameworks that accellerate innovation.

Innovation Sprints are exciting and rewarding but intense. They are not for everyone. Our Sprints take place across two days, both 6.5 hours long. We sprint from 09:30 to 16:00, with two 15 minute breaks and 30 minutes for lunch.

We will be imagining demonstrators in a super short time. That means we need your brilliance totally focused on the challenge for the whole sprint. There won’t be time in sprint hours to undertake other work but we do provide a breakout space should you need to deal with urgent work or personal matters.

What do I get?

You get to help imagine and create a better future. You get to work with other superstars to solve difficult challenges and grasp exciting opportunities. And you get to play a role in helping InGAME add scale and value to the Dundee cluster by attracting businesses and organizations, funders and investors from across the UK and beyond to work with all the talented people and companies that reside here. Most importantly, you get to establish Dundee as the innovation engine of Scotland and the UK, imagining and building a better future for all.

What happens if my ideas get commercialised?

InGAME shelters the Intellectual Property (IP) for all solutions imagined during an Innovation Sprint. This empowers teams to focus on innovation and allows us to connect their successful solutions to follow-on investment and/or funding, even if teams don’t want to continue working on their solutions. InGAME is led by Abertay University, therefore it officially shelters the IP for all participants. The university acts as a ‘safe harbour’ until such time as the IP might be commercialised. If that point is reached, the University would work with the team to maximise the opportunity while protecting recognised contributions to date. Meanwhile, the legal clout of the university provides the extra security to ensure all IP is protected from predators.

How do I apply?

InGAME knows Dundee is packed with creative, innovative gamemaking talent. That’s why we designed our sprints to be super short, to maximise participation from talented professionals, freelancers and students within the local videogame cluster. It’s also why we recruit through a competitive but simple Expression of Interest process. Simply fill in the short form on each dedicated Sprint page, submit and, if accepted, get ready to innovate! A member of the InGAME team will contact you within 5 working days of the application period closing to confirm your participation.
